Oldest Ainu-Japanese dictionary found at temple

The oldest Ainu was a Japanese dictionary made by a Buddhist monk about 300 years ago has been found at Fumon-ji Temple in Fukui's Minamiyama-cho district. It is the oldest Ainu-Japanese glossary. It was created by Buddhist monk in 1704 when he visited Ezo.

"It contains a wide variety and number of vocabulary. Few ancient documents written in Ainu are available today, and it is one of the most important historical materials," a researcher said.

It was found by Toshiyuki Kunisaki. He is a chief priest at Gokuraku-ji Temple in Usa. They said that it was in bad condition when they found it with edges burnt in a fire, but it still able to read.
